Differences Between Ww1 & Ww2
Compare & Contrast Most people would agree that all wars are terrible and have great affects on everyone in its path. Some believe that all wars are the same, each war ending with deaths, casualties and destruction. Now, two very important wars, World War One and World War Two easily did just that. Both of these wars involved multiple countries to fight in it. These two wars were extremely great in size compared to most other wars. Although World War One and World War Two were both worldwide wars they are very different in a war tactics and womenââ¬â¢s roles.World War One and World War Two were known for using major war tactics. Trench Warfare was invented by the Germans and was later discovered to be one of the worst war tactics. It was a tactic where trenches were dug underground for soldiers to live in and wait for battle. Military troops fought to break through enemy lines by attacking the suicide chargers who ran into machine gun fire. Machine guns were new in this time and w ere becoming a popular war weapon. While World War two used the tactic of Blitzkrieg which was very different approach compared to trench warfare.Blitzkrieg was a war tactic that involved suddenly and quickly attacking the enemy on land as well as in the air. Leaving the enemy blindsided by the sudden attack. Both of theses great wars also had different takes on womenââ¬â¢s roles. In World War One women began to take on roles primarily meant for men. Such as post women, bus conductors, farming and plenty more. Women were not only taking on roles meant for men but the overall employment rate increased for even traditional womenââ¬â¢s jobs.In this period in time, women were beginning to gain more respect for showing that they could work at various jobs. While World War Two is much like World War One when it comes to women roles, it does however have a major difference. Women during World War Two began to not only take on more jobs but they more specifically began to take part in indirect war roles. Like manufacturing ammunition for the war and working jobs like women snipers, machine gunners, tank drivers and just about everything else that was needed for the military.Despite the fact that World War One and World War Two are both world wars, they were very different in war tactics and womenââ¬â¢s roles. From These differences show that over the years not only does time change, but also the growth of technology which can influence war tactics and the growth of the womenââ¬â¢s movement continued to expand. Itââ¬â¢s great to see the difference between these two great wars because they easily show the amazing changes in social and military growth. If anything World War One and World War Two are nothing alike.

Chinese Inventions Essay
China is unlike any other country; winning a trip to China would be a dream come true! China is known for several years of their creative and useful inventions. Along with the many useful inventions, China was known for the first recorded observation of comets and solar eclipses. China has been creative for with their contributions to the world. China created useful inventions such as toilet paper, bristle tooth brushes, paper, printing, gun powder, and the compass. (Chinaââ¬â¢s Science and Technology, 1999) Although, we as individuals cannot live without some of Chinese items, before the Chinese inventions we had no choose. Before the invention of paper; bamboo silk, papyrus and parchment were used for writing. In 105 BC, Chinese invented what we referre today as paper from bamboo, bark, hemp, and rags. Shortly after in 206 B.C- A.D. 220, paper and ink were invented, the first form of ââ¬Å"printing on paperâ⬠ came from rubbings. This process consisted of using a brush in o rder to smooth pieces of paper, the paper was then carefully coaxed into the depressions, and left to dry with a fan. Paper was also used to make things like raincoats, windows and umbrellas. In which brings us to our next most useful invention. (Chinaââ¬â¢s Science and Technology, 1999) The fan was also invented by Chinese; the fan was mostly carried by women and solders. They were made out of bamboo and silk. The fan consisted of bamboo spines sticking out in almost a half-circle with silk wrapped around it. The silk that was used on the fan was also one of the creative inventions of China. Silk was discovered as one of the best materials for clothing. The Emperorââ¬â¢s wore only white silk robes to signify richness. Shortly after, silk was introduced to the general public and was used as clothing, decorations, musical instruments and even fishing lines. (Chinaââ¬â¢s Science and Technology, 1999) The compass was made from a wooden circle and a magnetic spoon on top. It was used as a mechanism when houses were built to check for perfect harmony with nature. When invented, the compass was intended for religious purposes only. (Chinaââ¬â¢s Science and Technology, 1999) Health was one of the most important things to the Chinese culture. The Chinese had many remedies that included natural herbs and acupuncture. Herbal remedies were not the only remedies used to heal the sick in China; doctors also used organs and parts from animals. Organs such as the sheepââ¬â¢s eye were given to patients to eat in order to get cured from the sickness. In some cases, the Chinese used Elixir, which was a potion that they believed would increase your years of living. Along with herbal medicine, within the 1st Millennium BC; Chinese invented a therapeutic method called Acupuncture, this was the most commonly used medical treatment. The intent of this technique was to restore health and well-being. It involved insertions of stainless steel needles into the ââ¬Å"acupuncture pointsâ⬠ of the body. (Acupuncture, 2010) China was also known for their Military inventions, They were responsible for the inventions of the crossbow, poison gas, tear gas, fire lance and rockets. Among the great Military inventions gunpowder was the most usefull. Gunpowder was accidentally invented, the intent was to make the elixir of life and to make the emperor immortal. (Chinaââ¬â¢s Science and Technology, 1999) Toilet paper is something that is taken for granted. It was mentioned around 589 A.D. In Korea. Toilet paper was introduced in China in 1391, before toilet paper was invented Romans used saltwater-soaked sponge on a stick, in public restrooms. English used pages from books, Americans used newspaper and pages from books. After years and years, toilet paper has been mastered to what it is now. We cannot live without that clean feeling. The skin Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
The skin - Research Paper Example Furthermore, it is going to discuss the functions of the skin. The skin is divided into two parts the epidermis and the dermis (Dean). The epidermis is the upper layer of the skin the one that is visible to the naked eye. The epidermis are also known as the cuticle. Underneath the epidermis is the dermis. It is that part that contains the nerve cells and the body hair. The skin derived its name from a Greek word meaning dermis of the skin and epi for outer (Dean). The skin has various functions. The skin guards the body from injuries(Jones, 63).. The skin also prevents germs from entering the body by trapping them on the soft body hair. The skin is literally the set alarm that warns our bodies to change according to the temperatures. Thus, the skin regulates temperature gain and loss. The skin also allows the body to release unwanted toxins from our bodies through mechanisms like sweating through the pores(Jones, 63). In conclusion, the skin is the largest body organ weighing about six pounds. It is made up of two parts, the dermis and the epidermis. The dermis is the outer covering while the epidermis is the inner part that contains the nervous system and cells. The skin has very many functions. It regulates body temperature, prevents injuries and germs from entering the body and it also releases toxins from the body (Patricia, 36). The skin is obviously a very significant body organ, yet it is the most neglected and uncared for body part (Patricia, 34). The skin tells the story of our lives. For example, another person can tell our health status, age, occupation, race and many more by observing the skin (Patricia,

Descriptive a Restaurant - Essay Example The crowd there was not talking loudly nor were they misbehaving in any sense. A slow music could be heard in the restaurant which added up to the beauty of the atmosphere. The restaurant used different types of pieces for decorating the structure which attracts the consumers. Paintings were seen to be hanging on the wall along with different graffiti on the walls. The lights in the restaurant were adjusted to a dim beam because of which the atmosphere seemed calmer. Altogether it can be said that the atmosphere of the restaurant added up to the beauty of the restaurant and made it worth visiting. The food is the most important thing that matters to the consumers entering the restaurant. A restaurant should ensure that they have a variety of food items which would attract the consumers. After entering this specific restaurant I ordered the recommendation of the chef and found it be very delicious. The variety of food in the restaurant ranged from Indian food to Chinese food which was very amazing for a person like me. As soon as I ordered my food I could smell the starters from a long way and as they served the starters I realized that they were as delicious as the smell was earlier. I ordered an Indian dish and found it to be very delicious.

Theoretical Perspective on Secure Attachment Essay
Theoretical Perspective on Secure Attachment - Essay Example He claims that the infant's primary or original bond is with its mother, which then become the basis for all the forthcoming loves he will be feeling. He also claims that infants only have the desire in his mother's arms simply because the infant has already established that his mother will satisfy and provide for his needs without delay. However, Freud's more significant theory to the development of infant attachment is his drive reduction theory. He used the basic biological drives that are innate in human as the basis for this theory. He explains this by stating that when an infant is driven, an example of which is when he cries, he will then experience pleasure by receiving food resulting to the restoration of balance. (Freud, 1964) Another theory was introduced by Erik Erikson, called the Psycho-Social Theory also known as the Pschodynamic Theory. He was the first to propose that there are different stages of human development that lasts throughout the entire life span. His idea s were a huge influence that led to the study of personality development His theory also accounts for the term "identity crisis." He introduced eight stages to human development and later on added a ninth stage in his book entitled ââ¬Å"Life Cycle Completed.â⬠ The first two stages pertain to the infant attachment theory, which he called the stage of hope and the stage of will. He claims that on the hope stage, between 0 to 12 months, an infant is trying to make a choice between trust versus mistrust as he tries to weigh whether his primary caregiver is reliable or not. The will stage on the other hand, is the stage of autonomy versus shame and doubt. He claims the will stage as the stage wherein the infant's need to explore the world, which may or may not be hindered by a caregiver's utter neglectfulness or over-protectiveness. (Cole, 2009) Though Freud instigated the infant attachment concept, John Bowlby was known as the father of the attachment theory after making the firs t and commonly known view on attachment theory. Bowlby believes that there are a number of innate control systems pertaining to behavior are a necessity for surviving as well as procreation. He also believes that attachment begins at infancy, continuing on throughout life. According to Blowby, an infant initially establishes a strong attachment with its primary caregiver and will become the infant's base of exploration. It is innate behavior for an infant to want to explore new things, however, when a child reaches away to explore and then faced with danger or feels scared, its secure protection base will be with the primary caregiver. Bowlby dedicated an extensive research to the concept of infant attachment, which he described as a "lasting psychological connectedness between human beings" (Bowlby, 1988). He also shared the psychoanalytic view that early experiences in childhood are important influences affecting development and behavior which may be seen later in life. Based on h is theory, our early attachment styles are established in childhood through the relationships between infants and primary caregivers. In addition to this, Bowlby was also of the belief that attachment had an evolutionary factor wherein it aids in survival stating that "the propensity to make strong emotional bonds to particular individuals is a basic component of human nature" (Bowlby, 1988). Bowlby also categorized different characteristics of attachments and are as follows: Safe Haven: When the child feels

Enterprise infrastructure Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Enterprise infrastructure - Essay Example It is subdivided into smaller sections within a large portal. An EIP allows users to get information in the desired context. It categorizes information for easy access to users. It also allows employees to collaborate by sharing information regardless of their geographical locations. An EIP allows an organization to disseminate information efficiently. It also enables an organization to consolidate all its websites in a single platform. In addition, it provides quick access to information within an organization. EIP allows employees in an organization to access relevant personalized information quickly. EIP can also provide targeted employee information depending on their roles preferences. One of the most important guidelines for determining the best information sharing approach is information security. In any communication, the message is supposed to remain confidential. It should not reach unintended parties. An EIP is relatively secure for sharing organizational information because various categories of users can access different portals. The system allows authorized users to login to respective accounts and get personalized information. The second factor that determines the approach of sharing information within an organization is the accessibility of the information. A good system of sharing information should be easy to use and widely available. It should not be confined to specific places alone. It should enable users to get what they want at any place and time. The third factor that determines information sharing strategy in an organization is the speed of dissemination. Information should reach the recipient within the shortest time possible. A good information sharing system should, therefore, transmit the information to the recipient within a short period. An organization should encourage the use of three information flows within the organization. The three information flows are downward, upward and

American Films and the Chinese Culture Research Proposal
American Films and the Chinese Culture - Research Proposal Example The research "American Films and the Chinese Culture" is meant to critically explore and exhaust the influence that films, especially those in the US have on the perceptions of people for the Chinese culture. This research is very important because everybody belongs to a culture. Furthermore, we are living in a globalized environment that values a cultural and racial diversity. To efficiently and effectively work together, it is important to understand the culture and values of other people. This would play a positive role in helping people to interact efficiently and effectively with each other. Having a wrong perception and the one which is negative concerning a particular culture may lead to stigmatization, discrimination, social labeling to the culture that is portrayed negatively. This would affect the development and growth of diversity in the international system. This research is therefore important because it would play a role in correcting the negative perceptions that people may have towards the Chinese culture. The culture under consideration is that the Chinese people are violent, majorly because of their Kung Fu cultural value. There is a considerable debate on the importance of Kung Fu amongst the Chinese people. However, controversy arises on the role of Kung Fu amongst the Chinese people. One side of the debate argues that Kung Fu is a violent cultural practice of the Chinese people. This is majorly because it promotes the use of martial arts, for purposes of killing the opponents of an individual.
MRSA Infection Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
MRSA Infection - Research Paper Example Antibiotics used to treat ordinary S. aureus infections are rendered useless in case of MRSA. Infection occurring in healthcare settings is called health care-associated MRSA (HA-MRSA) while that occurring in the community, among healthy individuals, is called community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) (mayoclinic.org 1). HA-MRSA infections are generally acquired through invasive procedures or clinical devices such as artificial joints, surgeries, intravenous tubings, and catheters while CA-MRSA generally spreads through skin contact among child care workers, high school wrestlers and people living in crowded areas (mayoclinic.org 1). MRSA infection occurs in various parts of the body and owing to its antibiotic resistance, it is difficult to treat. Mild infections result in boils and sores on the skin. MRSA can also infect lungs, urinary tract, and bloodstream (webmd.com 1). There has been an alarming spread in the incidence of tough MRSA strains and because of its antibiotic resistance, MRSA is also called superbug (webmd.com 1). As per CDC, less than 2% of the US population carries MRSA (mayoclinic.org 3). MRSA was discovered in 1961 and research has shown that, like ordinary strains of S. aureus, it is also carried by many healthy people on their bodies, especially their noses (Matheson et al. 299). MRSA infection is common among those with a weaker immune system and while it is commonly a hospital-acquired the infection, its incidence in people who have not been hospitalized has become recently significant (webmd.com 1).

About post-classical network period of television (1980s- present) Research Paper
About post-classical network period of television (1980s- present) - Research Paper Example Various themes predicated in the show reveal a drastic shift in the values of families, individuals, also how women empowerment had begun as a struggle back in the era. Furthermore, the effect of social class system on the overall social blanker of the society is also apparent. Therefore, the paper will explore the dimension where Lorelai Gilmore had to go through a hard struggle her entire life for the sake of her brilliant yet angelic daughter Rory Gilmore as a single mom. Also, the paper will explore the educational aspects of the era explicating how the educational system is quite competitive not just in terms of brilliance but also in terms of class struggle. Therefore, the paper will aim at explaining transitions in the society over time by focusing on the two aspects highlighted above. The post classical network period was a period of immense experimentation with comparatively bolder themes. With the advent in technology and industrialization, the social change also followed where people started accepting the liberal mindset. Yet, that doesnââ¬â¢t imply that there was absolutely no resistance. This was one of the reasons why TV shows started focusing on tabooed themes to explain the issues surrounding them. Gilmore Girls revolve around the central theme which narrates the story of a single mother struggling to nurture her daughter and raise her as an empowered individual (Diffrient & Lavery 21). Her daughter, Rory is an extra-ordinary student with a passion for reading and hopes to get into Harvard one day. Lorelei`s status conscious affluent parents didnââ¬â¢t approve of her lifestyle choice to raise her daughter as a single child, thus she left the comforts of her parent`s home and moved to a small-town with a simple life. Though both the mother and the da ughter love their simple lifestyle, yet Lorelei isn`t capable enough to financially support her daughter`s education and thus, she had to reach out to

Organizational Behavior in Criminal Justice Essay Example for Free
Organizational Behavior in Criminal Justice Essay Organizational behavior in a criminal justice agency is the way in which employees and their superiors interact amongst themselves and with one another both positively and negatively. Organizational behavior itself is the study of social conduct as it relates to the confines of a specific group. It is the study of how an individual or group interacts with one another and the dynamics of the personal relationships that evolve from that contact (Duan, Lam, Chen, Zhong, 2010). The shifting paradigm trends describe by Schermerhorn, Hunt, and Osborn (2008) can be used to delve further into the understanding of the organizational behavior that exists in most criminal justice agencies. The archetypical performance falls into one of seven categories; commitment to ethical behavior, importance of human capital, demise of command-and-control, emphasis on team work, pervasive influence of information technology, respect for new workforce expectations, and changing careers. From these trends both positive and negative characteristics of criminal justice agencies can be identified. ââ¬Å"Commitment to ethical behavior: Highly publicized scandals involving unethical and illegal business practices prompt concerns for ethical behavior in the workplace; there is growing intolerance for breaches of public faith by organizations and those who run themâ⬠ (Schermerhorn, Hunt, Osborn, 2008, para. 14). In criminal justice agencies ethical violations often are handled with little fan fair. Any level of impropriety introduced in the prying public eye can have innumerous repercussions. The loss of public support and trust can be a huge problem, but it affects the internal structure too. Depending on how fairly and swiftly the situation is handled determines whether or not those in charge gain or lose respect. Judgments will be passed on how the situation was controlled, and how it should have been dealt with. In delicate matters like this behaviors of retaliation and accusations of bias are important to be kept at a minimum. ââ¬Å"Importance of human capital: A dynamic and complex environment poses continuous challenges; sustained success is earned through knowledge, experience, and commitments of people as valuable human assets of organizationsâ⬠ (Schermerhorn, Hunt, Osborn, 2008, para. 14). The workforce is the heart of a criminal justice agency. It should be the single most cherished asset. The appreciation of experience by an organization is vital. But more importantly the recognition, respect, and aspiration by new members and seasoned is a must. This necessity recognizes a clear chain of command and model of training. ââ¬Å"Demise of command-and-control: Traditional hierarchical structures are proving incapable of handling new environmental pressures and demands; they are being replaced by flexible structures and participatory work settings that fully value human capitalâ⬠ (Schermerhorn, Hunt, Osborn, 2008, para. 14). Shared responsibility and the extinction of the ââ¬Å"because it h as always been done that wayâ⬠ is a requirement in the modern criminal justice agency. It is being replaced by the attitude that the old way is not always the best way, and we all have a lot to learn from one another. While command still flows in one direction; ideas can come from anywhere. ââ¬Å"Emphasis on teamwork: Organizations today are less vertical and more horizontal in focus; driven by complex environments and customer demands, work is increasingly team based with a focus on peer contributionsâ⬠ (Schermerhorn, Hunt, Osborn, 2008, para. 14). In a criminal justice agency teamwork may have become common place, but improvements still need to be made in the area of information sharing. While no man is an island, neither is an agency. For the sake of public welfare resources need to be pooled. ââ¬Å"Pervasive influence of information technology: As computers penetrate all aspects of the workplace, implications for workflows, work arrangements, and organizational systems and processes are far-reachingâ⬠ (Schermerhorn, Hunt, Osborn, 2008, para. 14). We are in the information technology age and the correct resources and know-how can be the deciding factor in the constant struggle bet ween criminals and policing agencies. Increased educational and computer skills demands are needed to boost and maintain an advantage at any level of criminal justice agency. ââ¬Å"Respect for new workforce expectations: The new generation of workers is less tolerant of hierarchy, more informal, and less concerned about status; organizations are paying more attention to helping members balance work responsibilities and personal affairsâ⬠ (Schermerhorn, Hunt, Osborn, 2008, para. 14). While a certain amount of attention should be paid to new workforce expectations it is important not to compromise the integrity of the job expectations. A balanced life should lead to a happy and relaxed employee who theoretically should also be more effective and efficient in an effort to maintain employment in the desired environment. Employerââ¬â¢s must remain fair but also realize their top priority in the criminal justice field is not to ensure employee happiness. An employee who can balance work and a private life on his own should be a valuable commodity. ââ¬Å"Changing careers: The new realities of a global economy find employers using more ââ¬Å"offshoringâ⬠ and ââ¬Å"outsourcingâ⬠ of jobs; more individuals are now working as independent contractors rather than as traditional full-time employeesâ⬠ (Schermerhorn, Hunt, Osborn, 2008, para. 14). In criminal justice agency this trend is no different. It is not uncommon for governments to hire private security firms and private corrections companies. However, by outsourcing such positions power is lost in the public sector. Monitoring a regulations create more work when dealing with outside policing forces. It also opens up a gray area for bad behavior and a hired gun mentality. While roles may be redefined privatization of criminal justice agencies can be more of a problem than a convenience. Study of workplace environments and the effects of the personnelââ¬â¢s behavior can only continue to bring about recognition of areas in need of improvement. Pre-fabrication Technology and Conventional Construction
Pre-fabrication Technology and Conventional Construction 1.1 Introduction Construction industry plays an important role in Malaysias economy. Therefore, it is important to introduce more advance or new technologies from overseas to our country in order to growth the economy. Pre-fabrication technology is a new construction method in construction industry. This technology has been widely used in many countries due to many pros it has over the traditional construction methods, which is cast in-situ method. Pre-fabrication is the assembling components making in a factory or manufacturing before deliver those components to the construction site. After completed the selected components on factory or manufacturing, those components will transport to the construction site where the structure is to be located. On the other hand, for conventional construction method, which is cast in-situ, is transporting those selected materials like cement, sand, aggregate, brick, etc from factory or manufacturing to the construction site. Then the assembly only will carry out on site after those materials have delivered to site. Industrialised Building System (hereinafter referred to as ââ¬ËIBS) is a technique of construction, which introduced by Construction Industry Development Board (hereinafter referred to as ââ¬ËCIDB) was succeed and applied the pre-fabricated technology into the construction industry in Malaysia. IBS is define as a construction system in which components are manufactured in a factory, on or off site, positioned and assembled into structure with minimal additional site work (CIDB, 2003). The first IBS project was a 7 blocks of 17 storeys flats, which involved 3000 units of low-cost flat and 40 units of shop lot along Jalan Pekeliling in the late 1960s. In addition, there have some of the projects been satisfied completed by used of IBS components such as campus building, apartment, residential, office, hospital, etc. 1.2 Problem Statement Pre-fabrication technology has become more and more famous and popular in Malaysias construction industry recently. This is due to the technology has many benefits over the traditional construction methods which is cast in-situ technology. However, it also contains some weaknesses for pre-fabrication technology. For example, the transportation costs may be very expensive to deliver the complete components to the construction site. Not only that, the maintenance cost and repairing cost is higher depend to the cast in-situ method. Therefore, for long term buildings are not suitable to construct by using pre-fabrication technology. 1.3 Aim The aim of this research is to compare the construction speed for typical wall element between pre-fabrication technology and conventional construction method, which is cast in-situ. 1.4 Objectives To define Industrialised Building System (IBS) There have some of the projects been satisfied completed by IBS of using pre-fabricated components such as campus building, apartment, residential, office, hospital, etc. To compare the advantages and disadvantages of using pre-fabrication technology and cast in-situ in construction industry Although pre-fabrication can save more construction costs and decrease construction period, but the demand of using this technology are still very low in Malaysia. To compare the construction speed by using pre-fabrication technology and cast in-situ in typical wall element In practically, the construction period of a project can take few years to complete. By using pre-fabrication technology, the construction period can be decrease, which compare with traditional construction method. 1.5 Hypothesis By using pre-fabrication technology is cheaper and efficiency than traditional method, which is cast in-situ technology. 1.6 Research Methodology There have three different types of research studies relating to the pre-fabrication and cast in-situ technology have carried out to fulfill this dissertation. They are literature review, questionnaire and case study. 1.6.1 Literature Review The study undertakes a comprehensive review of the relevant literature on the subject of pre-fabrication and cast in-situ technology. The resources for literature are from books, magazines, journal and articles, which available from library and internet research. 1.6.2 Questionnaire This stage involved preparing and sending out the questionnaire to number of Construction Company in Malaysia. The questions are mainly asking about the actual construction speed by using pre-fabrication technology in Malaysia. 1.6.3 Case Study Few case studies for pre-fabrication technology in Malaysia will be carrying out for this research, either in supplier and/or in construction. Through these case studies, the problems, benefits and cost for pre-fabrication technology in actual construction industry can defined. 1.7 Scope of Study The scope of study for this research included to define the background of the IBS system as well as the previous projects done by IBS system with satisfied completed in Malaysia. Besides, research on the advantages and disadvantages of the pre-fabrication and cast in-situ methods. In addition, it will cover the construction speed for actual construction projects, mainly in Malaysia. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: Theory and Applications
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: Theory and Applications Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Assessment Introduction Definition of Cognitive behavioural Therapy The term Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) covers a number of techniques of spoken interactive therapy which are considered useful in helping people solve life problems such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and various addictive problems. (Beck A T 2005) Basic theoretical principles Cognitive behavioural therapy has arisen as a hybrid therapy combining the elements of cognitive therapy, which was originally conceived and developed to assist in changing dysfunctional beliefs, thoughts, attitudes, and expectations, and behavioural therapy (which is referred to as behaviourism) which was originally developed to change how people acted in response to various stimuli. Influential authorities such as Beck suggested that how one thinks about a situation determines how one acts and our actions determine how one thinks and feels. (Beck A T et al. 1979). This therapy endeavours to change elements of thinking (cognition) and behaviour together in order to achieve its beneficial effect on feelings. The therapy is based on an assumption that feelings and behaviour patterns such as anxiety and avoidance behaviours are related to the development of maladaptive beliefs and their related thought processes in an individual. Therapy is based on a series of collaborative interactions between the patient and the therapist in conjunction with specific cognitive and behavioural techniques such as Socratic dialogue, monitoring of beliefs, activity monitoring and scheduling, analysing advantages and disadvantages of avoidance, graded exposure assignments, behavioural experiments and role-play. The exact form of the therapy will depend on the presentation of the patient and the professional expertise of the therapist. (Hobbis I C A et al. 2005) Brief overview of the evidence base to support CBT There are two basic issues here. In order to define the evidence base for Cognitive behavioural therapy, one has to define the condition for which it is said to be efficacious. In the context of this essay, one can specifically consider Cognitive behavioural therapy in the area of anxiety treatment. A good place to start is the study by Stanley (Stanley M A et al. 2003). This was a small retrospective study which Cognitive behavioural therapy was contrasted with ââ¬Å"usual careâ⬠ and demonstrated a clear statistically significant advantage in the Cognitive behavioural therapy group on a broad battery of anxiety measurement tools. This correlates well with other findings from larger studies (viz Wetherell J L et al. 2005) and the meta analysis by Pinquart (Pinquart M et al. 2007) Principles and practices of CBT assessment Role and purpose of CBT assessment process related to relevant theory described previously. Describe the different stages of CBT assessment process. There are a number of different assessment models. For an illustrative example one can use the Williams Garland model (Williams C et al. 2002). This model uses five discrete areas of assessment which are described as:- Area 1: Situation, relationships and practical problems For example, Debts, housing or other difficulties. Patients may have problems in relationships with family, friends, colleagues, etc. Life events such as deaths, redundancy, divorce, court appearances may all be relevant. Area 2: Altered thinking An exploration of the typical characteristics of dysfunctional thinking that are commonly found in anxiety and depressive states, for example patients may display an ability to overlook their strengths and become very self-critical. Patients will often unhelpfully dwell on past, current or future problems; they put a negative slant on things, using a negative mental filter that focuses only on their difficulties and failures. They can catastrophise events and will typically mind-read and second-guess that others think badly of them, rarely checking whether this is true. (after Whitfield G et al. 2003) Area 3: Altered emotions There are a number of altered emotional states commonly found in anxiety states which can include feelings of anxiety, stress, worry, fear, panic and being ââ¬Ëhassledââ¬â¢. Guilt, anger and irritability are common as are shame and embarrassment. Area 4: Altered physical symptoms There is a wide variety of symptoms commonly found in anxiety related conditions and these can include restlessness and an inability to relax, feeling of tension, shakiness or unsteadiness when standing, insomnia, palpitations and feelings of depersonalisation. Area 5: Altered behaviour In anxiety states one of the commonest symptoms is avoidance behaviour which can usually be elicited by asking the question ââ¬ËWhat things have you stopped doing since you started feeling anxious?ââ¬â¢ Define and describe role and purpose of formulation in CBT assessment There are two major reasons for this type of assessment. Firstly it serves as a guide for the practitioner to determine the impact of the anxiety (or depression) on the patientââ¬â¢s overall subjective experience and thereby define goals and targets. Secondly it is helpful for the patient. The Five areas assessment model is easily grasped and understood by patients and thereby allows for an understanding of the effects that their anxiety state has on them. Often the act of writing down their symptoms under the headings allows for a degree of emotional distance which allows a patient the ability to examine their symptoms more objectively. Discuss the role and purpose of measurement in CBT model including psychometric and ideographic measures and problem and target statements Include relevant references and appendices (e.g. examples of measures) The academic determination of the evidence base for Cognitive behavioural therapy is ultimately based on studies that have measured the degree of response to the intervention. To this end there are a number of tools available for measurement. A comparatively new tool that has been described in the literature is the Questionnaire on Control Expectancies in Psychotherapy, (Jennings S 2008) which quantifies the degree to which responsibility for change is shared between therapist and patient. Other older tools include the state trait anxiety inventory, the graphic anxiety scale, the hospital anxiety and depression scale, and the anxiety-defining characteristics tool (Chuldham C M et al. 2008) Engagement issues Engagement with the patient can be a complex matter. A brief overview of the literature on the subject suggests that studies that have shown a poor patient response to Cognitive behavioural therapy have identified one of the causes to be inadequate expectancies of the patient specifically regarding the responsibility and the mechanisms of therapeutic change. Responsibility can be assigned to the therapist rather than the patient. In this respect, assessing control beliefs specific to the context of the psychotheraputic approach and specifically linking them to the expected therapy outcome can help highlight this specific aspect. The Nature of Perceived Ultimacy in Zen Buddhism Essay -- Philosophy
This paper will explore the question of how to understand the nature of perceived ultimacy in Zen Buddhism. This will be achieved through providing a justification for why this question should be of any interest and then hypothesizing about possible implications of the results. Next, the framework that is to be used in categorizing the core beliefs in Zen will be explained and made clear. After this description is complete the author will proceed to fit Zen Buddhism into this framework and will demonstrate that the Zen religion is no exception to the employed framework. Finally the author will describe the perceived ultimacy of Zen Buddhism. The topic of Zen Buddhism and understanding how it fits into a framework that was designed to describe and compare religions is important because religion has a major impact on the world and to be able to understand and ââ¬Å"exploreâ⬠ what the world has to offer is an important aspect of existence as a human being. Some might wonder why Zen Buddhism is important when it is not a major religion in the United States, but perhaps that is the very reason it is so important to understand Zen Buddhism and to be able to describe it in a way that allows one to make comparisons with more familiar religions in a standardized framework. Zen Buddhism in particular is interesting in the setting of the United States because as Americans we have had little experience with Buddhism. Shunryu Suzuki related in the book Zen Mind, Beginners Mind, that Americans start Buddhism with a very pure mind, a beginners mind, which allows us to understand the Buddhaââ¬â¢s teaching as he meant them to be understood (138). Suzuki also states in the book that because of this, hopefully, young Americans have the chance to fi... ...if he and the world were just created from nothingness (Suzuki 67), this too is a change in how humans normally experience the world. Wherever Zen Buddhism fits in exactly between secular and spiritual is hard to tell, and like Suzuki said perhaps Zen is a religion before religion and the appreciation of our original nature as strange as it might sound to us is even described as ââ¬Å"unusualâ⬠ to Suzuki himself (124). It is clear however that Zen fits into Youngââ¬â¢s framework and perhaps with a beginnerââ¬â¢s mind one can make use of this and find for themselves the answers to at least part of the questions about their own life. Client Server Model Essay
The Internet is based on a client-server model, where every day, millions and millions of computers are accessing thousands and thousands of servers. Many of the things we use our computers for today make use of this model, from web browsing to electronic mail. Over the years, competing models of networking emerged to compete with the client-server model. The peer-to-peer model has been a prominent competitor with vast differences. Mainframe architecture, from which the client-server evolved, still has a place in business today and the two compete on the back-end. This essay will discuss the client-server model, and compare it with other models it has been in competition with ââ¬â the peer-to-peer model, and mainframe architecture. THE CLIENT-SERVER MODEL The client-server model is a distributed application structure that involves tasks being partitioned between servers, which are responsible for providing services or resources, and clients, which do the service requesting. Clients are usually a personal computer, and recently have been expanded to include mobile devices. The client does not share its own resources with the server, but it does initiate requests for services or content from the server. Client/server systems evolved from mainframe architecture when it was realized that personal computers had become more self-sufficient, both in data storage and processing power, not to mention more affordable. Personal computers were able to offer just about all the features that were offered on mainframe computers. At the outset, the client-server model existed as a two-tier architecture ââ¬â a client and an application server, in which the client acts as a presentation layer that communicates with the server, a centralized data layer. Most client-server architectures are two-tier. In fact, most Internet applications are simple two-tier applications. This includes Email (SMTP), web browsing (HTTP), and file transfer applications (FTP). Each application for these protocols presents a graphical user interface (GUI) that helps a user interact with the server. A third tier was later added, as a functionality layer to exist between the presentation layer and the data layer. This layer, referred to as the application tier, was added to manage requests made from the client. This is where scripts are performed before information is requested from the data storage layer. In terms of our class, this is where our ASP code would be executed to query the Northwind database. As mentioned above, the client-server model is the most commonly used model with regards to the Internet. There are many advantages to using this model over others, but at the same time, there are some disadvantages to using the model. CLIENT-SERVER MODEL ADVANTAGES The client-server model has several advantages. The first and foremost is centralization. Having one central server makes it much easier to manage a network. For instance, having a central server that stores a networkââ¬â¢s user names and passwords, as well as each userââ¬â¢s privilege rights makes it much easier than having to manually configure the rights on each computer on the network. Without the distribution of resources that client-server architecture allows, if a network contained multiple servers, each one would need to be updated individually with user login and privilege information. System updates can also be made to many computers at once from any computer on the network, instead of having to do so one by one. Scheduled backups made by the server make it easier to recover lost files. Leaving each individual client on a network the responsibility of backing up its own computer can prove to be complicated and dangerous. Centralization also allows security measures to be distributed throughout the network by the server, making it safer than a peer-to-peer network. It also means that users on a network using the client-server model can use shared printers and storage space, which can cut down on costs. Having central storage on the server is also a good way for client computers to save hard drive space and prevent redundancy. The second advantage is its ease of scalability. Adding several computers in a client-server model is much easier than doing so in a peer-to-peer model. This is because an administrator can easily install any necessary applications to computers added to the network from the server. Making any additions to a client-server network will not cause any interruptions to other clients on the network. Having a client-server setup also ensures safer remote accessibility. CLIENT-SERVER MODEL DISADVANTAGES Although the client-server model has many advantages, it does come with some disadvantages. Though some costs can be cut using a client-server-model as mentioned above, the server must be robust and powerful enough to support the client computers on its network. Because of this, there is a large cost that goes along with operating the servers. Another disadvantage that adds cost is the maintenance needed for the servers. Most client-server networks need at least a network administrator to oversee and maintain the network. This is something that is not needed in a peer-to-peer network, since there is no centralized server, and each client node is responsible for maintaining itself. Because a client-server based network relies on a central server, each client in the network is reliant on the server to operate. If the server goes down for any reason, the network will not be able to function. To ensure that this doesnââ¬â¢t happen, many networks now employ backup servers, which of course, is an extra cost. Congestion is also a possible issue for networks using a client-server model. Again, since the centralized server is handling the brunt of traffic from clients on the network, if many client computers are using the network at the same time, it will slow down the serverââ¬â¢s response.
Carpe Diem
Alex Rohret Mrs. Oxley English 1302 22 February 2013 The Light and aristocratical Sides of the Force The first gear period I heard the phrase Carpe Diem, I wasnt sure what to realise in mind. Robert Herricks song To the Virgins to take hold more(prenominal) of Time, is a consummate(a) mode to tell others how to cognize each(prenominal) day to the fullest when he says Gatherye rosebuds darn ye may, Old time is still a-flying And this alike(p) flower that smiles to-day To-morrow will be dying. This is the first stanza to his verse form, and in my opinion is the top hat stanza of the poem. Herricks meaning behind this stanza is basi wauly to Seize the Day. This stanzas translation, to me, is to do what you indispensability art object you can because you will non live forever, and if you dont do what you want today, accordingly tomorrow you might non loll the chance to do anything at all. The reason that were studying Carpe Diem is because of the characterization bloodless Poets fiat. The setting of stillborn Poets Society takes place in the 50s at an all male childs prep domesticatetime, where it always seems to be cold. A new English teacher, Mr.Keating, at the school inspires a group of kids to start an resistor poetry reading group, where the students read poems create verbally by dead poets, or indite by themselves. All of the poems read at these meetings follow the identical meaning carpe diem. The ca-ca of this group is the Dead Poets Society. Out of Herricks same poem That age is best which is the first, When youth and blood are tepid But being spent, the worse, and worst quantify still succeed the former. This excerpt explains that it is get out to live life to the fullest time youre young, because as you age, you lose chances to seize the day.The Dead Poets Society is adolescent boys, which is exactly the time to seize the say according to To the Virgins to Make Much of Time. The adolescents in this society act Carpe Diem differently, because there is more than one way that it can be interpreted. Since there are different ways to interpret Carpe Diem, each character does somethi ng different. For example, a boy named Knox meets a girl from the local public postgraduate School, and falls for her. He works up the courage to call her one night, and she invited him to a party at her boyfri land ups house, where he kissed her, and proceeded to get beaten by her boyfriend.Another boy, Charlie, changes his name to Nuwanda, and insists all of the dead poets to call him as such. During a school commodious meeting, Nuwanda brings in a phone and pretends to get a call from god, he then tells the headmaster that the call is for him. All of these boys do exactly what Herrick says in his poem. They are conclave ye rosebuds, while they can. I like to think of Carpe Diem as similar to The Force in Star Wars there is a grungy position, and a escape side. The side that most of us would like to know is the side where one does whatever they want and simply has fun doing it, which is known as the light side. The dark side is where one does what they want, only what they want to do may be way overboard, and the repercussions of their actions may lead to solid consequences, or nonetheless death. One of the boys, Neil, has an commanding father that is making him go to school to be a doctor. But what he really wants is to be an actor. Mr. Perry would say things like, You have opportunities that I never even dreamt of, and I am not going to let you waste them (Dead Poets Society). This, to me, is what set Neil over the edge. I believe that at this moment he realized that his father was trying to live through him. This was the moment that Neil finally has had enough, this was Neils climax. What happens to Neil brings out the dark side of the mash that is known as Carpe Diem. Instead of public lecture to his father about what he wants, he does something as drastic as taking his own life. Neil went entirely too distant with living each day like it is you last, because he would have lived the next day, if it were not for his poor choices. The resoluti on of this film double as another boys climax. Todd is a very bashful boy that only tries to do what is expected of him. Todd was even bashful through Mr.Keatings teachings of Carpe Diem and all of the Dead Poets Meetings that took place. But at the end of the film, Todd finally broke his silence, and stood up on the desk saying O captain my captain, defying his unpredictable replacement teachers orders. He does this in honor of Mr. Keating, and everything that he taught them. currently enough all of the members of the Dead Poets Society, as well as a fewer other students that have no relevance, are standing on their desks saying the same phrase, O captain my captain. To the Virgins to Make Much of Time played a king-sized role in the Dead Poets Society, by capturing the lighter side of carpe diem. This poem as well as captures what I believe carpe diem means to me Live life to the fullest, and to live life while the blood is still warm. This poem embodies carpe diem, and everyt hing that the Dead Poets Society stood for. Understanding how the film and the poem connect so deeply helps the viewer, or the reader, appreciate them both just that much more. Works Cited Herrick, Robert. To the Virgins to Make Much of Time.
